RAM is one of the most misunderstood PC upgrades. More isn’t always better, and the wrong setup can cost you frames even with plenty installed. Here’s the practical answer.
The short version
16GB is the comfortable minimum for gaming today and handles most titles fine. 32GB is the current sweet spot if you multitask – game while streaming, keep a browser and Discord open, or play a few memory-hungry newer titles. 64GB is overkill for pure gaming and only worth it for heavy creative work alongside games.
Speed and dual-channel matter as much as capacity
Two sticks running in dual channel are meaningfully faster than one stick of the same total size – this alone can add frames, and it’s a common mistake to run a single large stick. RAM speed (and low latency) also helps gaming frame-rate, especially on AMD systems. So 2x16GB of reasonably fast RAM beats 1x32GB of slow RAM for gaming.
Enable your memory’s rated speed
New RAM often runs at a slow default until you enable its rated profile (EXPO on AMD, XMP on Intel) in the BIOS. Many people install fast RAM and never turn this on, leaving performance on the table. It’s a single BIOS toggle and it’s free.
Signs you actually need more
If games stutter when you alt-tab, textures pop in late, or your system slows to a crawl with a browser open alongside a game, you may be RAM-limited. Check your usage in Task Manager while gaming – if you’re regularly near your total, that’s your cue. If you’re sitting at 60% usage, more RAM won’t add frames.
Buying advice
For a new build in 2026, 32GB (2x16GB) at a good speed is the safe, future-friendly choice for most gamers. Stick with 16GB only on a tight budget for pure gaming, and reserve 64GB for workstation-style workloads. Whatever you buy, run two sticks and enable the rated profile – the setup matters as much as the number on the box.
