The filament you choose matters as much as the printer. Each type prints differently and suits different jobs, and picking the wrong one is a common source of beginner frustration. Here’s the practical rundown of the four you’ll actually use.
PLA: start here
PLA is the easiest filament to print and the right choice for beginners and most decorative or light-duty prints. It prints at low temperatures, barely warps, and doesn’t need an enclosure. Its weakness is heat and durability – a PLA print left in a hot car can deform, and it’s more brittle under stress. For learning and for most models, though, PLA is ideal.
PETG: the tough all-rounder
PETG splits the difference between easy PLA and tough-but-fussy ABS. It’s more durable and heat-resistant than PLA, handles outdoor and functional parts well, and is only moderately harder to print (it can be a little stringy). If you want parts that survive real use without a big jump in difficulty, PETG is the go-to.
ABS: strong, but demanding
ABS is strong and heat-resistant – the stuff a lot of consumer plastic is made from – but it’s the hardest of these to print. It warps as it cools, so it usually needs an enclosed printer and good ventilation because of the fumes. Choose ABS for functional, heat-exposed parts when you’re ready to manage its quirks, not as a beginner default.
TPU: the flexible one
TPU is a rubber-like flexible filament for phone cases, gaskets, grips, and anything that needs to bend. It prints best slowly and can be tricky on printers with certain extruder designs, but nothing else gives you flexible parts. Use it when you specifically need flex, not for rigid models.
Choosing quickly
Learning or making decorative parts? PLA. Functional parts that need to be tough but you want an easy life? PETG. Heat-exposed, high-strength parts and you have an enclosure? ABS. Something that needs to bend? TPU. Start with PLA, add PETG when you need durability, and reach for the others only when a job specifically demands them.
