How to Set Up a Capture Card for Console Streaming

Streaming or recording console gameplay cleanly almost always means a capture card. The setup trips people up once, then makes sense forever. Here’s the plain walkthrough.

What a capture card does

Your console outputs video over HDMI to your TV. A capture card sits in that path, copies the video signal, and feeds it into your PC (or records it directly), so your streaming software can broadcast it. Most cards “pass through” the signal to your TV so you still play on the big screen with no added lag on the TV side.

The basic wiring

Console HDMI out -> capture card HDMI in. Capture card HDMI out -> your TV (this is the pass-through you play on). Capture card USB -> your PC. That’s the core of it. An external USB card is the easiest starting point; internal PCIe cards exist for dedicated streaming PCs.

The one gotcha: HDCP

PlayStation consoles enable HDCP copy protection, which blocks capture of the system UI and some video apps. Turn HDCP off in the PlayStation system settings so gameplay captures cleanly (this is normal and expected). Xbox generally handles this without the toggle. If your capture is a black screen, HDCP is the first thing to check.

Software setup

Open OBS (the free standard), add a “Video Capture Device” source, and select your capture card. Set the resolution and frame rate to match what the card supports (commonly 1080p60). If you see the game, you’re 90% there. Then add your mic, and do a private test stream before going live.

Two-PC vs one-PC, and latency

You can stream from a single PC that both captures and encodes, or use a second PC purely for streaming to keep your gaming PC free. For console streaming, one PC is usually fine. Note the preview on your PC has a slight delay – that’s why you play looking at the TV pass-through, not the PC preview.

Quick checklist

Wire console -> card -> TV, plug the card into your PC, disable HDCP on PlayStation, add the capture device in OBS, match resolution/frame rate, add your mic, and test privately first. Nail those once and console streaming becomes routine.
